Escape attempt chronology
With emphasis on Katte. Fritz's imprisonment goes on for so long after the escape attempt that it would make sense to do a separate chronology.
May ?: Fritz writes to Katte that he plans to escape during the Zeithain festivities and to meet him in Leipzig, and that Keith will proceed directly to England.
May 30: FW and Fritz depart for Saxony.
May 31: Zeithain festivities begin.
June 28: Zeithain festivities end.
July 2: FW and Fritz return to Berlin.
July 9: Katte/Fritz/Guy Dickens meeting. Fritz gets 15,000 thalers.
July 12: Sir Charles Hotham leaves Prussia, abandoning the dual marriage project.
July 14: Katte/Fritz final meeting in Potsdam in the park. Katte agrees to try to get permission to travel to the west on a recruiting mission. Urges Fritz to try to escape from Wesel.
July 15: Fritz writes to Katte, asking him to meet him in Cannstatt. FW and Fritz spend the night at Meuselwitz, Seckendorff's estate.
July 18: Depart Meuselwitz.
July 21: Arrive in Anspach.
July 23: Katte's cousin brings a letter saying Katte's request to travel was denied. Fritz replies to Katte to wait until further notice.
July 29: Fritz writes that FW abused him for having dropped his knife. He tells Katte to meet him at the Hague and look for a count Alberville. He also writes to Lt. Keith in Wesel, telling him to go to Holland.
August 4: Fritz and FW leave Ludwigsburg. Fritz starts preparing to fly, wearing a red coat/mantle. They spend the night in barns at Steinsfurth.
August 5: At 2:30 am, Fritz gets up, dresses, prepares to leave. At 3 am, the page Keith arrives with the horses. Rochow prevents an escape. Fritz lingers behind while FW rides to Mannheim. Fritz shows up two and a half hours late.
August 6: Peter Keith escapes from Wesel. Sunday, after church service, the page Keith confesses the escape plan. They spend the night at Darmstadt.
August 8: Arrive in Frankfurt.
August 10: Arrive in Bonn. Fritz confides in Seckendorff, says he will fess up if his accomplices are spared. Names Katte.
August 11: Arrive in Moers. Seckendorff tells FW what Fritz said.
August 12: Arrive in Geldern. FW discovers Lt. Keith has deserted. He sends Fritz ahead to Wesel. Von der Mosel supposedly prevents him from running Fritz through with his sword on the spot. FW sends an order to Berlin to arrest Katte.
August 13: Fritz is questioned by Derschau. He says he was going to Strasbourg. FW discovers Lt. Keith has gone to the Hague.
August 15: Katte requests leave to go to Malchow. The order to arrest Katte arrives in Berlin in the evening.
August 16: Natzmer receives the order to arrest Katte in the morning and arrests him.
August 17: (Approximately.) Katte's valet covers up with a paper a grey coat made for Fritz.
August 18: Keith embarks to London from Scheveningen.
August 19: In Wesel, Fritz writes a letter to his father requesting pardon. FW composes an order for Fritz to be conveyed to Küstrin.
August 25: FW in Dessau. Writes a letter to Lepel giving orders concerning Fritz's imprisonment at Küstrin.
August 26/27: FW arrives in Berlin.
August 27: Katte's first interrogation.
August 28: Katte's second interrogation.
August 30: Katte's third interrogation.
August 31: Katte's fourth interrogation.
September 2: Fritz interrogated at Mittenwalde.
September 4: Fritz arrives at Küstrin.
September 9: Katte's fifth interrogation.
September 16: The main interrogation of Fritz.
September 19: Swedish and Danish courts intercede on Fritz's behalf. FW writes to the Staatsminister in London that he should try to capture Keith.
September 20: Katte's final interrogation. He admits that he would have gone if Fritz had, but he didn't think Fritz would.
October 25: Kopenick trial begins.
October 26: Second day of trial.
October 27/28: Verdict returned.
October 31: Kopenick court meets again, returns same verdict.
November 1: FW condemns Katte to death.
November 2: Katte taken before the court martial and his sentence read. Writes to his grandfather and the King, asking for pardon.
November 3: FW orders Katte taken to Küstrin. He is accompanied by Major Schack and the pastor Müller. FW replies to Katte's grandfather.
November 5: Katte arrives at Küstrin, approximately 2 pm. He writes a last letter to his father.
November 6: Katte executed, approximately 7:45 am. Buried in the local cemetery at 2 pm.
November 14: Hans Heinrich, Katte's father, writes to FW asking permission for four weeks' leave to bury his son on the family estate and to grieve.
November 17: Grumbkow arrives in Küstrin.
November 18: Fritz gives Grumbkow Katte's last letter.
November 19: Fritz takes an oath to obey his father, receives a pardon, and moves from prison in the Schloss to house arrest in town.
November 24: FW grants Hans Heinrich's requests.
